I never quite understood the need to procreate to feel fulfilled in life. I mean, if having kids is the best thing you’ve ever done, I must say you’ve lived a pretty boring life. Well, that was until 2.5 years ago, when my child, aptly named Mai (never in Catalan, as in I’m never having kids), was born. When no one is looking, I’ve caught myself whispering to him “you’re the best thing that ever happened to me”. I thought it was our little secret, until one day I nod at him across the table and mouth, “you’re the best…”. And Mai, as if on queue, says “si, si… best thing happen me”. I pretended I didn’t understand, but Alba caught on right away: “I KNEW you’d LOVE it!”. “You knew?”. “Yes, and so did everyone else that knows you”. I was like, “news to me, I don’t think I even like kids, only mine”. To which she rolled her eyes and said, “I knew you’d love it; I just wasn’t expecting it’d be more than me.”
The whole thing has caught me by surprise. I mean, I frequently play hooky from work to go out mid morning for coffee and croissants. When we were scouting daycares, my first question was “how late can I bring him in?”. You see, everyone wants to drop off their kids as early as possible, whereas I want to know how late I can take him, just in case we’re on a roll riding around the neighborhood on bikes, or going out for coffee.
So yes, best thing ever. I don’t know how I’ve managed to do everything I have in life, and somehow missed this: front row seats to the greatest show on earth– a little human seeing the world for the very first time.
So good, that I managed to convince Alba that one wasn’t enough. Indeed, the whole point of this long overdue post, was to say we’re expecting, but since I’ve been so busy with life this last year, I guess I should change that to say… we have a week old new addition to our family, cause kids are like Lay’s potato chips… you can’t have just one.
Hermoso!!! La realidad nunca te imaginé con hijos, pero eres espectacular como papá. Felicidades a los dos y que sigan disfrutando de ese viaje maravilloso.
Never say never – twice. Congratulations!
Aldy I don’t know if you will see grandkids, but if your own children make you to feel like that, grandchildren make you crazy about them. We are having the time of our lives with our three grandchildren, and the last one “ nos tiene colgados”.
